1984 - “YOU CAN SEE WAY OFF THE HIGHLANDS”: CLEARING THE VIEWSHED

The early work focused on opening the southern view from the mansion to the river.  For Daisy, the restoration of the viewshed was visible progress, “Isn’t that a lovely view down there?” she says, “I haven’t had that view for years. Only this winter they cut it through so that we could see way down. The lighthouse is just to the left, you see.  You can see way down and way off the Highlands.”

Work clearing the viewshed continued year-by-year and was complete by October 1992.  It turned out the view worked both ways; the mansion could now be seen by passing Amtrak trains.
