1981 - WILDERSTEIN’S ORIGINAL LANDSCAPE PLAN IS DISCOVERED

The original landscape plan by Calvert Vaux was discovered in the attic of the mansion in a fragile state. Following emergency measures and painstaking conservation work the document became the blueprint for restoring Wilderstein’s grounds.

Daisy Suckley said of the landscape plan: “We’re very lucky we found it. It was put on top of a bookcase, up in the attic. It fell down behind the bookcase and the chimney. I didn’t even know it existed. Over the years there were some leaks in the roof. This thing got completely soaked. It’s just extraordinary that it has been rescued.”
